In the spring of 1952, Emmanuel Baptist
Chapel was started as a mission from its Mother Church, the Marion Street
Baptist Church of Aiken, South Carolina. The first service was held in
July1952 with approximately 15 people present. Wade Jumper was pastor here
as well as being full-time pastor at Montmorenci Baptist Church. He
faithfully pastored this chapel for five years. At the end of his
pastorate, there were 41 members enrolled. We started with two small
wooden structures on approximately 5 acres of ground at the corner of
Silver Bluff and Dougherty Roads. Rev. Jumper resigned to accept a call to
Charleston, SC.
On September 21, 1958 at 2:30 p.m., a Presbytery was formed for the
purpose of organizing Emmanuel Chapel into a New Testament Church. At this
time the Chapel was constituted as a church and the name selected was
South Aiken Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Smith was then called as our pastor
and stayed for three years. During this time the first unit of the
educational building was erected and another one started. Rev. Smith
resigned July 10, 1960 to attend Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth,
Texas.
Rev. Gene T. Bowman was called as our pastor on September 4, 1960. During
his pastorate, plans were discussed regarding building of a new sanctuary
and a new pastorium. Our church grew tremendously in number under his
leadership. Rev. Bowman resigned effective July 26, 1964 to accept a call
to the Parkerson Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia.
During the months we were without a pastor, Rev. Zack Ford Bond of Beech
Island, SC, served as Interim Pastor.
The church voted to call Rev. David G. Jeanes of Union, SC, to pastor our
church on October 11, 1964. He remained with us for three short months.
During this time much work was being done. On May 12, 1965, the contract
was given to Abbott and Crumpler Contractors to erect a pastorium to be
completed as soon as possible. The new part of the educational building
consisting of classrooms, nursery, fellowship hall, restrooms, and kitchen
were completed and dedicated.
Rev. Grover F. Tyner, a retired Minister, served us as Interim Pastor for
the months we were without a leader. He served us most faithfully during
those months.
Rev. Earl Moseley of Silver City, NC, came on the field as our pastor on
September 19, 1965. At this time our pastorium was complete and the
Moseley family moved into it. Our pastorium is a four bedroom brick home
located on property adjacent to our church buildings. Rev. Moseley
remained with us until April 17, 1968 when he resigned to accept the
pastorate at Deaverview Baptist Church of Asheville, NC.
Rev. Charles Cooper of Augusta, Georgia, served us very faithfully as
Interim Pastor until our Pulpit Committee could seek and find a pastor.
On September 9, 1968, Rev. Kenneth W. Nixon of Turkey, NC, was called as
our pastor. During his ministry here, services were held for prisoners at
the Chain Gang Camp each Sunday afternoon with the deacons of the church
helping in these services. This continued for many months and several
prisoners were won to Christ through this ministry. Much emphasis was put
on our debt reduction program and our church debt was reduced tremendously
under his leadership. Rev. Nixon resigned on November 16,1973 effective
immediately.
Rev. George Youman, a retired Army Chaplain of Augusta, Georgia, was
called to serve as Interim Pastor until such time as our Pulpit Committee
should seek and find a full-time pastor to serve us.
Rev. A. Timothy Madaris was called as our pastor and came on the field
August 18,1974. During his pastorate a daycare was started. In January of
1975 plans were discussed about starting a Christian School and the church
voted to undertake this endeavor. South Aiken Baptist Christian School was
opened in August of 1975 with a kindergarten, first, and second grades.
Each year a grade or two was added until we reached the 8th grade in 1980.
Our school has done very well and is totally self-supporting. In July
1976, an additional 13.1 acres of land was purchased adjacent to our
church property. Rev. Madaris resigned on August 29, 1976.
Rev. Al Thielke of Augusta, Georgia, served us very faithfully as Interim
Pastor during the months we were without a full-time pastor.
Rev. R.C. Johnson came on the field as our pastor on August 18, 1977.
During his time with us a new sanctuary was constructed by Northway
Construction Company. The auditorium would seat 425 persons; there is
office space for the pastor and secretary, choir room, bridal room,
library and vestibule. During the time of construction and due to the
growth of our school, our sanctuary was converted to classrooms for the
school. Worship services were held in our fellowship hall for several
months. Dedication services of our new sanctuary were held on March 25,
1978. Rev. Johnson retired from active ministry on February 1, 1980.
Rev. C.P. Spencer was serving as Administrator of our Christian School. He
also accepted the duties of Interim Pastor until a new pastor was called.
Rev. Earl "Chip" Angell was called to our church as Pastor-Teacher on June
22, 1980. He remained with us until February 12, 1983. Under his
leadership a new four classroom building was constructed for our
Christian School.
Rev. Al Thielke served faithfully again as our Interim Pastor.
Rev. Michael Dyar is now serving as Pastor. He began his ministry with us
on June 12, 1983.
